HEIRLOOM PLANTS
Tell your children about [the land laid to waste],
Let your children tell their children,
And their children another generation.
JOEL 1:3 NKJV
Some heirloom plants have been passed down for hundreds of years, and the reasons are as diverse as the plants themselves: better flavor, better texture, sentimental value, no genetic modifications, etc. By and large, though, these heirlooms do not grow well in commercial gardens because they are usually quite temperamental. They need loving, individualized care and handling, and they must be harvested by hand.
The prophet Joel spoke of another type of heirloom—a spiritual one. We don’t have much information about this man of God, but we do have the message God spoke through him, urging the elders of Judah to pass down God’s lessons to the younger generations. The people had grown complacent about sin and its consequences. As a result, accounts of important experiences as well as crucial truths about God were slipping further away with each generation.
Warning the people that God’s patience would eventually end, Joel compared the results of the coming destruction to a crop devoured by an army of locusts. The people would find themselves at a point where revival would no longer be possible. Joel called the people to turn back to God, so that neither they nor future generations would suffer.
Joel’s message, however, is not all doom and gloom; he does offer hope for those people who repent of their sin and appeal to God’s mercy. Today, we find that hope in Jesus—but will the next generation? Only if we pass along this most important heirloom: the gospel message, coupled with our testimony of God’s faithfulness to us personally. We can hope they learn from our mistakes, accept biblical counsel, and build their lives on the foundation of God’s truth and His values. Just like growing those heirloom plants, this process requires loving, individualized care and handling.
And nothing fuels our efforts to reach the next generation with this heirloom message like our own passion for God. Ask Him to enable you to share effectively the precious spiritual heirlooms that will edify the hearts and minds of the next generation.
Father God, I long to build a spiritual legacy that honors You by pointing to You. Enable me to boldly pass along my spiritual treasures to those who will journey behind me.
